Case Study: Building Har Maala
Problem
Many people want a simple way to read, count, continue, and track their Naam, Bani, Shabad, and Paath practice — without complicated setup, login, or distraction. Other options can feel heavy or cluttered for someone who simply wants to sit and do Abhyaas.
Product Goal
The core promise is simple: a user can select or add a Bani, Shabad, or Naam, read it, count it, save progress, and continue later without confusion. Everything else on the screen supports that one flow.
Product Decisions
- Local-first practice — your recitation stays on your device.
- No login or cloud sync for the beta.
- A calm, devotional interface instead of a busy dashboard.
- Settings kept visible and direct, rather than hidden behind deep panels.
- A direct reading and counting flow as the main screen.
- Optional BaniDB search and import for additional Gurbani content.
- Reading support for Gurmukhi, Devanagari, and Romanized display.
- Larivaar, Larivaar Assist, and Vishraam pause support.
- Progress and history without gamification.
UX and Accessibility
- Clean, uncluttered reading controls.
- Adjustable font size, weight, and spacing for comfortable reading.
- Reading script options to suit the reader.
- Calm, helpful empty states that explain what will appear.
- A gentle target-completion moment, not a loud reward.
- No competitive leaderboard and no noisy notifications.
Beta Status
Har Maala is being prepared for beta release. The focus right now is steady, real-world testing and gathering early feedback before a wider launch.
What is next
- Real-device testing across different phones.
- Listening to early beta feedback.
- Publishing the hosted privacy policy.
- Preparing the Play Store listing.
- Considering future additions such as backup and restore, a focus mode, and a calm background sound.
